ELIAS FOLEY
Recording, sound design, electronic music composition.

Elias was born in 1972 in Boston Massachusetts, in 1977 his family moved to the Flathead Valley in Montana. He is a sound designer, electronic music composer, writer, and audio recording engineer with a background in media analysis and animation. Elias started recording sounds and disassembling and reassembling audio electronics as a child, he sang in a choir throughout school and had a brief opportunity to create electronic music while in high school. After many years as a cook and baker, he returned to his childhood interests, attending Evergreen State College. Always a collector of music and sounds, at Evergreen Elias was introduced to the tools, theories and practices that allowed him to become a creator. For his senior thesis he created Pixel Depth, and exhibition of electronic music, experimental video and animation that ran at the historic Capital Theater in Olympia, Washington and 911 Media Arts in Seattle. Elias graduated from Evergreen with a BA and went on to create live performances, DJ sets, two audio/visual installations and sound design for theater and dance companies in Portland, Oregon. Elias’s interests in deep listening, electronic music, and the means of media production inform his compositions and lead him to create Tamarack Music, a digital and cassette music label. Elias’s art focuses on the sublime, inducing trance states through repetition and rhythm. He creates his “sonic sculptures” out of digital audio recordings and samples, choosing to carve out sound from field recordings and artifacts of his personal existence rather than a sample pack or synthesis generated sound. He has most recently played underground dance venues in Portland, Oregon.
Elias is the creator of Battery Powered Music, an open-mixer music session focused on inclusion and improvisation. He had a radio show on the Portland Radio Authority for over 3 years showcasing his blend of global and local music. He creates music under his own name and as Temple Maps. His music collaborations include Cavatica Sessions, Black Daddy, and Star Kaleider. Elias was the audio archivist for The Dill Pickle Club in Portland Oregon. He has worked with Portland Experimental Theater Ensemble, Hand2Mouth Theater, Tahni Holt, bobbevy, Vertigo Theater, Profile Theater, and Oregon Children’s Theater. Elias currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
